Rated 5 Star on Amazon:
A brilliant take on the Indian woman’s psyche and unmasking the naked face of the society.
Patriarchy isn’t just about men; its roots are dug deep in our psychologies from the day we are born. At times, it’s our parents who sow the seeds of patriarchal traits in our belief systems, and at times, the society takes it upon itself to teach us its codes with the To-Dos and Not-to-do’s. Right from the dresses we are ‘supposed’ to wear to the ‘old-world- charm’ we are to imbibe – how often do we question these societal sacraments?
‘Even A Caged Bird Sings’ plants a sublime speck of thought in our so-called ‘modern’ minds – it urges one to think and question our perfectly defined lives. As you sift through the pages, you connect with each character because it has been all of us at some point in life – all of those times when we muttered in between our breaths while we actually wanted to shout out our lungs but couldn’t – because a woman isn’t supposed to, because a woman is supposed to be resilient.
What caught my fancy is the elaborate description of the settings. The sprawling gardens to the lone corner of the protagonists’ rooms – everything spans out vividly before your eyes. I am amazed at how the author penned down the moments of conflicts as if her own. She must be one of those silent observers you find on the corner seat of a public transport, intently reading people with her veteran eyes – savouring every detail of their behaviour, analyzing their tensed smiles, or their lonely gazes.
For me, the book ‘Even A Caged Bird Sings’ is a catharsis of my own emotions because I found myself gritting my teeth when Eva is taunted, Sujata is belittled, and Puja is caught in her own emotions while I took a happy swirl when they finally decided and did break free.
The power of the pen can make a caged bird sing
The pen is indeed mightier than the sword. With a virtual pen in hand the author has painted pictures -miniatures that recreate life in vivid, myriad and true colours. Using the same pen as a rapier she has slashed through age-old prejudices and dogma that plague and torture our society.
Patriarchy, prejudice, petty politics are experienced every day but hidden away beneath the carpet of adjustment. The author has taken out of these dusty cobwebs and cleansed the thoughts so that a new sunrise of hope and love can arise.
Each story is a story of hope, love and reconciliation. The writing style itself is fluid and lucid. Very well penned.
Very entertaining and gripping stories.
Very Entertaining and Gripping Stories
The fantastic trilogy “Even Caged Birds Sing” is written with blood. It begins with the story of Puja’s terrible dilemma in life and sublimation to ‘Nirvana’ through death. The middle one is Sujata’s lone battle against patriarchal social dictates. The last one is Eva’s triumph over the workplace politics. The narratives are suspense-packed, evocative minute detail-oriented as well as pathos counter-balanced with pleasant humor. A good read.

A Must Read Book
A journey towards Empowerment!!!!
Loved everything about the book right from title to book cover to the stories that depicted journey of women towards empowerment. In these stories, the author depicts their inner struggle to break free under tremendous social pressures and boundaries set for them. We women easily connect to the protagonist of each of these stories as we had been through at least few of these situations (if not all) at some point of time in the journey of life. The inner conflict of women with the outer self have been beautifully depicted in these stories.
Must say the author has good observation skills based on the way the plots of each story have been described in detail.
Todays Indian women overcoming prejudice
What a delightful read, being totally naive of an Indian womans place in todays society, I found myself fully engaged in this book.
Mandira really brings her stories to life for her readers, I felt the oppression these women lived under, and yet how modern intelligent
women are forging ahead with courage and determination.
